It’s rare that I do a still life. The exception might be when I am given or find a piece of fruit, a vegetable or a flower that moves me because of its form or beauty or because the gesture of kindness in itself moves me. Last Saturday I drove into the countryside looking for sunflower fields that I might paint. One of the lovely people I met was a woman with several pear trees. She gave me at least seven pears. They weren’t particularly beautiful pears. In fact, they were quite ruddy, but cute in a peculiar way. Fruit only has so long. It ripens and needs to be eaten. So the other thing about fruit, vegetables, and flowers, we have only so much time to paint them.
